Kindle Review: Some Facts About Ebooks

By Trevor Weir

The Kindle is a point of contention among many lovers of the written word. When reading a Kindle review, you will often hear book lovers extolling the virtue of printed books and expressing fear that the Kindle may cause their demise. The physical object of a book creates passionate, sentimental feelings in a reader. People cherish the browsing experiences they have in bookstores, and love the feel, smell and look of books.

The Kindle was developed by a subsidiary of Amazon.com, and first launched in 2007. Since its launch, there have been two updated versions developed, as well as a version for the iPhone. We hear a lot about Kindles and ebooks being "the wave of the future, " and one might assume that the majority of Kindle users are young people who have grown up with electronic media as the norm. Interestingly enough, this is not true. Statistics indicate that 70% of Kindle users are over the age of 40, so this technology definitely seems to have taken hold even with generations who grew up with only print books.

Here are a few features that have satisfied many users of the Kindle:

It is Portable

The Kindle is small and compact, and ideal for travel. When going on vacation, taking more than one book in your luggage or carry-on becomes heavy, awkward and tedious. But the Kindle allows you to bring an entire library with you wherever you go.

Availability of Titles

There are many, many books available in ebook form, which can be purchased and transferred to a Kindle for a very small fee. This saves the time it would take to search bookstores, and the money it would take to have physical copies shipped.

Durability

While a paperback or hardcover is easily damaged on a rainy day, on the beach or by a swimming pool, the Kindle can be taken into these environments without the same fear. It will not tear, become worn, or sustain the same damage of a printed book.

Ecologically Sound

The Kindle, unlike printed books, does not use paper, and therefore preserves trees.

While many pros have been cited to the Kindle, some cons have been noted as well. Here are a few of them:

Just like the iPod, the Kindle runs on battery power. It needs to be charged, and if you are caught without your charger it will die.

Many technical books and reference titles are unavailable in ebook form, so the Kindle is not ideal for research purposes.

Since it is an electronic device, the Kindle, like a Cd player or laptop computer, will need to be powered down during the beginning and end of airplane flights.

Although, in many ways, the device is more durable than print books, it must be handled with care. Also, one damaged paperback or hardcover is just one book, while a damaged Kindle can result in the loss of many books at once.

The Kindle is definitely catching on as a popular reading alternative with many generations, and will be a part of our cultural future. However, it does not seem likely that it will wipe out print media any time soon.
